Welcome to Laurelwood!
Smarter Balanced Field Test Begins in April
Starting the week of April 7th the students in grades 3 through 8 in Evergreen School District will begin taking the Smarter Balanced Field Test. This Field Test replaces the California Standards Test or STAR in English language arts and mathematics. The Smarter Balanced Field Test is an essential step toward the goal of implementing a comprehensive new statewide assessment system designed to ensure all children graduate prepared for college and careers in the global economy of the 21st Century.
Through mid May, students will take the English language arts, mathematics and a performance based task assessment online. While the content of the test will be similar between schools, the State has assigned slightly different sections to different schools and grades and therefore each school test schedule will vary.
The first administration of the Smarter Balanced Assessment is designed to be a “test of the test”. Participation in the Field Test will give students valuable exposure to the future assessment system, and hands-on experience with the functionality of technology-enhanced test questions and performance tasks. Additionally, it will allow our district to test our technology infrastructure and provide teachers an opportunity to adjust to the new system. As such, no results from these tests will be provided to parents, schools or districts.
In addition to the Smarter Balanced field test, students in grades 5 and 8 will still take the California Standards Test in science during the first two weeks in May and these results will be mailed to parents during the summer.
The California Department of Education has developed a field test video that provided an overview of the test. If you would like to learn more visit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKerb7NsDUE.
